High Performance Driving Events Are Very Safe, But...

Always Be Cautious
I've been going to High Performance Driving Events (HPDE) for six years and have yet to witness a bad accident.  However, during HPDE you will be on an active race track driving at a high rate of speed.  Sometimes things go wrong.  If you keep your focus forward, avoid distractions and drive within your means, you will be prepared if anything pops up.

A Few Things That Have Popped Up

1)
A friend severely cracked a brake rotor.  Fortunately he felt the vibration immediately and was able to bring the car into the pits without incident.  (see photo below)

2) I threw off an upper radiator hose causing my car to erupt into a cloud of white steam.  The haze of coolant and water on my tires was too much to keep the car on the track, but I was able to drive straight off into the grass.  The only thing damaged was my pride.

3) Another friend lost his brakes heading into a corner.  His rear pads had worn through and allowed the piston to push out of the caliper.  Once the piston came out the brake fluid soon followed.  Again, the driver was able to negotiate the corner and bring the vehicle to the pits without loosing control.  (see photo below)

4) I darn near run out of gas on track once.  The engine burped a few times in a corner just before I noticed the low fuel idiot light on the instrument panel.  That day I learned that you can't run a 30 minute track session with less than 1/2 tank of gas.  The infamous, non-linear, Ford fuel gauge almost got me that day.

5) I saw a guy snap a power steering belt while on the track but he still maintain control of the car.  Again, no damage done except for the broke power steering pump that causes the belt to snap.

6) A driver carefully and with great control drove his car straight off a fast section of track when his passenger ball joint failed.  The front right corner of the car collapsed but the driver was able to keep the car under control and on all four wheels.

Words of Wisdom (Learned the hard & expensive way)
If you're gonna run a stiffer suspension and R-compound track tires, then you need to upgrade to a track style oil pan.  These oil pans have increased capacity and improved baffles to reduce the risk of oil starvation.
